Keeping Your Marathon Pace
One of the most important elements of running a marathon is keeping the correct pace. If you start too fast, you will hit the wall and might not even finish. A better option is to start too slow, but then you will always be leftwondering how much better you could have run. So how can you discover the right pace for you? Try doing this workout, and you will soon arrive at a good estimate of what your optimum pace should be.
The 10 x 800 Workout
If you think you might run a 3:40 marathon, then try running 10 repeats of 800 meters on the track at a pace of 3:40 each. Take a recovery rest for 3 minutes 40 seconds. Then repeat the run rest cycle. If you are attempting a 4 hour marathon, then your repeats should be paced at 4:00 minutes each (with 4 minutes recovery in between). It’s quite simple! Training For Other Distances
Due to some quirky mathematical coincidence, this method works for the marathon but not other distances. You can use the 10 x 800 workout for training at other distances (like the 5k) because it is still a great training workout. You just can’t use your times to determine your 5k race pace, because it doesn’t work that way!
